Maureen Baringer, president of Baringer & Associates LLC, announced opening of a new division of her company, Upstate New York Events. The division provides networking, educational and promotional opportunities for businesses, professionals and college programs related to the events industry. Upstate New York Events maintains chapters and hosts networking events in Lake Placid, Albany, Syracuse, Rochester and Ithaca.

Cortland event-planning firm adds new division

01/05/07: CORTLAND — Maureen Ryan Baringer, owner and president of Baringer & Associates, LLC, has added a new division to her Cortland–based events and promotions firm.

The division, called Upstate New York Events, will provide promotional, networking, and educational opportunities for upstate New York businesses, professionals, and college programs in the events industry. Baringer expects the new division to boost her firm’s annual revenue.

Baringer decided to start Upstate New York Events because the closest event-planning membership organization is in New York City. Upstate New York Events is the first event-planning membership group in the area to have a student focus, Baringer says.

“I wanted to reach out for the people [in business] like me,” she says.

Attending meetings in New York City can be difficult for small companies in upstate New York, Baringer explains. While the meetings were informative, it was just too inconvenient, she adds.

Baringer also wanted to reach out to college students in the area, which is why she wanted to include internship and job listings on Upstate New York Events’ Web site.

“There are no event-planning groups or associations to get hands-on experience,” she says.

Upstate New York Events will feature a Web site (www.upstatenyevents.com) where those who become members can promote their businesses or college programs by listing the business’s or college’s name, contact information, logo or photo, and Web site address. The site will help companies and individuals find the right photographer, car-rental agency, caterer, limousine service, or disc jockey for any event, Baringer explains.

The site will also have a blog to help members network, as well as internship and job postings for students studying the event-planning industry in area colleges.

Upstate New York Events will boost Baringer & Associates’ annual revenue by 4 percent, she predicts. Any increases in costs will be offset by the revenue growth, she adds. Baringer declined to disclose annual revenue totals.

Upstate New York Events will feature five regional chapters including Northern New York (Lake Placid), Eastern New York (Albany), Central New York (Syracuse), Western New York (Rochester), and the Southern/Finger Lakes Region (Ithaca). Baringer picked each region because of proximity to a major university or college. Meetings will be held four times per year in each region.

Baringer is hiring an independent contractor for each of the five regions to recruit members, promote the division, and plan events. The goal is to recruit 125 members in 2007, Baringer says.

Individuals, college students, small and large businesses, and college programs can join. Membership rates range from $100 per year to $500 per year.

In the future, Baringer would like to offer scholarships to local college students majoring in hospitality and recreation. In addition to owning and operating Baringer & Associates, she has taught a program-planning course as an adjunct professor at Ithaca College. Baringer has planned a major special event with her students each semester.

Baringer founded Baringer & Associ-ates, at 25 Clinton Ave. in Cortland, in 1995. Baringer and her husband, John, co-own the building. Baringer & Associates currently employs two full-time workers.

Baringer & Associates provides corporate-event planning for businesses, including handling promotions and public relations. Events can range from a 12-person corporate party to a 3,000-person trade show. Baringer & Associates specializes in elaborate, corporate events — not large festivals, Maureen Baringer explains. In 2005, Baringer & Associates planned more than 50 events, she says.

Prior to starting Baringer & Associates, Baringer was the executive director of the Cortland County Chamber of Commerce for three years. She also worked as an event planner for the Cortland City Youth Bureau for eight years. Baringer has a bachelor’s degree in recreation management from SUNY Cortland.
